The clients wanted to improve an overgrown slope that was eroding and visually unappealing. We installed native shrubs, perennials, and grasses and the clients have been thrilled with the birds and pollinators that visit regularly.
I was pleased to be featured in Carolina Home and Garden about the benefits of using native plants and reducing lawn areas with the use of meadows.
Buncombe County Early College 9th graders are developing a design for an underutilized space along the Swannanoa River at Azalea Park. The students, assisted by community partners and the City of Asheville, are examining how to use innovative and sustainable design methods in public spaces to increase and support environmentally healthy interactions between humans and nature. I am pleased to be one of the community partners. We had the project launch in early March and I was very impressed with the thoughtful questions asked by the students.
Thanks to Dragonfly Landworks who did a great job implementing my design for this residence. The clients wanted to redevelop their front and back yards to create more usable space and play areas for their young family. Extensive use of dry stack stone walls and boulder walls were used to create terraces and allow the installation of a swimming pool. Plan also included stone patio with hot tub, stone steps in both front and back yard, and native plantings throughout the site for screening and aesthetic improvement.
From the City of Asheville: “A just completed Urban Tree Canopy Study determined that there has been a 6.4% loss in tree canopy in the City of Asheville in the past decade. The City recognizes the importance of trees and their many benefits to our ecology, such as air quality, carbon reduction, stormwater runoff and pollution control and reducing the effect of heat islands in our City. The City is looking to develop an Urban Forest Master Plan, when funding is identified to pay for it. The findings of the Urban Tree Canopy Study lay the groundwork toward a Master Urban Forest Plan. The purpose of a Master Urban Forest Plan is to identify not only ways to preserve the tree canopy but to increase it.”
