Mars Hill Stormwater Demonstration Project

This stormwater demonstration project features several different bioretention cells, wetlands, infiltration strip, mycofiltration strip, and pervious pavements to demonstrate best management practices for stormwater management. Hydrocycle provided the engineering services and MWLA did the planting design and layout of the elements such as bridges, pathways, arbor with green roof, signage, and site furniture.
Hydrocycle Engineering and Mary Weber Landscape Architect won a Friends of the River Award for the project.

Warren Wilson College Educational Wetland

MWLA coordinated with faculty and stormwater consultant on the design of an educational stormwater wetland with associated pathway, seating area, and signage. A detailed planting plan featuring wetland plants was developed and installed by the college landscape crew. Plan includes area for a future outdoor classroom and a small arboretum of native trees and shrubs.

Fairview Slope Stabilization

The clients were experiencing significant erosion and drainage problems from the steep slope above their home. Large boulders were installed to stabilize the slope and native plantings were added.  A significant amount of asphalt was removed from the driveway to reduce the amount of impervious surface and a locust edge was created with openings to allow some water to drain into the adjacent planting area.

Flat Creek Native Plants Restoration

This site along Flat Creek  was overwhelmed with exotic invasive species. MWLA designed a planting plan to restore native plants in the riparian area and coordinated planting days with Town staff and volunteers.

Marshall Rain Garden and Slope Stabilization

Siting the new home and long driveway on this 60-acre horse farm with sloping topography required extensive attention to grading, slope stabilization and stormwater management. The home was designed around a large water feature with a rain garden to capture water from the roof. Native plantings were used throughout the site including in the riparian buffer area, wetland, and on the steep slopes lining the driveway.
